maybe "fun" in all its senses is what sade saves for her real life. what's so interesting about this woman is that she isn't a slave to the music -- music isn't the most important thing for her. in the end its a job, a job that has paid incredibly well. the funny irony is that her fan's wait with baited breath for her next release, hoping she will create the masterpiece of which they believe she's capable. ive no doubt sade tries her best in the studio, and a few times she has created some masterpieces, but in the end it doesn't really matter to her. It just matters to the fans.

I agree and disagree about the writing your tunes...I guess it comes down re-envisioing or interpretation? I'd never take away the screechy glory of Bette Midler's Stay With Me or Aretha's Respect because someone else was first!

Late on this, but thanks for the November James Brown post. He's my fav, even above the divas <3 happy new year!

An excellent article, with only one minor bone to pick.

"Skin"

I think its one of Ray of Lights strongest moments, and one of Madonna's best album tracks to date. I see no "lyrical" obliqueness, (maybe the rumored magnetic poetry of Candy Perfume Girl yes) but a fairly clear cut narrative about a desperation to connect with another human not heard on a Madonna track since Burning Up.

The
"I'm not like this all the time" refrain has Madonna admitting something rare..being out of control.

The track ends in a cocophony of sound, synths, Underworld like percussion, and Moroccan flute sample.

A stellar moment

LOVE this entry, Gavin! You pretty much summed it up for me too. I never could stand the "exclusivity" thing. I've been on the receiving end of it far too many times, and in the LGBTQ community as well. Heck, i wouldn't even be interested in being "included" in such clubs.
Great blog!

Peace,
